On our final day in Windhoek, we enjoyed a short tour around parts of the city. When I had first arrived, I was too tired to really see and remember much of WIndhoek. But on this final day, the weather was beautiful and we had all morning to enjoy the sites.
The city is a mix of colonial and modern architecture. One of the most recognizable buildings was the Christuskirche (Christ Church) which was founded in 1896. In the same area we saw several old buildings such as a fort and the Parliament Building mixed in with modern structures. The photos included here are of Christuskirche plus a statue at the top of Parliament Gardens which was just below the Parliament building.
After we finished our sightseeing we stopped at a local crafts store where they had tons of different types of items for sale all by local artists, many of whom were attending their small shop areas. I rarely buy ‘souvenirs’ but did find myself bringing back a couple of Christmas tree ornaments, a locally crafted belt plus a simple but beautiful painting. Several of the more unique items were actually recycled materials turned into different products. One of my favorites was the bottoms of 2 Litter plastic soda bottles, repainted and turned into gift wrap boxes.
We also did a quick stop at a large grocery store where I picked up some salt and pepper grinders (with local Namibia salt chunks and peppercorns). Our guide also pointed out in the parking lot what looked like a type of 4 wheel vehicle that had a camper on its back. He mentioned that these were mainly rented by tourists and they had seen very few for the last couple of years. But he was very encouraged by the number of them that he saw - hopefully tourism was returning!
We had our final lunch on a stone balcony of what felt like a small castle on the hill in the middle of town. A great view of the surrounding area and the breeze was refreshing. I also enjoyed the ‘hike’ to the washrooms through the narrow stone lined halls and stairs which felt like an adventure though an old German castle.
It was time to finish the adventure. Therefore after lunch we had to head out of town to the airport. Of course there were a few more animals on the way. The airport experience was a bit different but you can probably say that for any airport in a different country. We all caught our flights and were headed out for a very long journey back home. But the travel was so worth it after such an amazing adventure!
