The Road to Hana is a well known route around the northern edge of Maui (Haleakala is directly south of Hua`ailua Bay shown here). It gives a more traditional view of the tropical beauty of Hawaii and its shoreline.
Of course there is surfing in Hawaii. But not at that many locations on Maui (many of the beaches are newer lava formed - a bit rough). Peahi Jaws though attracts many surfers. It is amazing watching them ride the variety of waves.
Leaving the surfing area which is also an agricultural region, the road narrows and starts into some very tropical and dense vegetation. The grass in the open fields is unbelievably green. The bridges are often one lane and appear to be very, very old (the heart can get to racing if you think about them too much). In some areas are homesteads with the traditional animals such as very contented looking goats. The forest is dense, bamboo like groves are everywhere, strange trees with massive above ground roots, vines and flowers - life is abundant here.
Roadside parks have interesting inhabitants - beautiful chickens and roosters and cats.
Continuing along the road as it gets back along the coast, the traditional beauty of Hawaiian shorelines appear. Dropping down to beaches the rivers from the mountain are wide and the sand and gravel is black indicating its source being from lava flows.
