Getting to my first official sight seeing location was a two stop effort on a reasonable size jet. My flight left Toronto (Canada), stopped in Vancouver (also Canada) and finally landed in Honolulu. It was a late night stop over and I only had time to get to my near airport hotel (Ohana Honolulu Airport Hotel - not really recommended) before I had to get up again (5 hours sleep) and head back to the airport.
This next flight was now on Hawaiian Airlines into Maui. The flight was canceled (small plane) but I was put onto a larger plane leaving at the same time and with lots of room - it was nap time for me; nice!
I landed at the airport and enjoyed the smaller size of it. Already felt relaxed. In the pictures you can see a volcano in the background.
From the airport a 30 minute drive took me across the narrow neck of the island down to the coast on the south-west side of the island to the town of Kihei where I stayed in a small motel along the beach. And yes, that is another volcano in the beach picture across the water (get use to this). In the map you can see it as the elevated north-west section.
This day was a drive around and take it easy day. I did find Christmas Trees for sell (had to take a picture; felt really weird with the beautiful weather). That night I met some people at the motel and we stayed up partying until around 3 or 4 in the morning. Just another typical start of a vacation for me. Especially since I was planning to drive up to the top of a volcano and do some hiking the next morning :)
