HAWAII 2008

Hawaii - before this trip I pictured Hawaii as a place with boiling lava, beaches with crazy surfers, scenic drives through dense vegetation, and pineapples.

Well, I was partially right. The pineapples are for the most part gone but in my short visit I saw lava flowing into the boiling ocean, massive craters with steam rising out of them, vast lava fields, strange and dark lava tubes that you can walk through, a landscape that looked like a martian desert, telescopes on top of massive mountains above the clouds, beautiful beaches crowded with surfers, jungle like vegetation above the black sand beaches, a beach and neighborhood full of hippies from the 70s, beautiful tide pools formed in underwater lava flows, and more.

All of this in just one week, on two islands. Think of what else there is to find. I will be going back for more!

JOIN ME ON MY 2009 TRIP TO A FEW OF THE BEAUTIFUL AND DRAMATIC ISLANDS OF HAWAII

This trip was on my own. Which basically means that I started and ended it by myself but met and enjoyed the company of lots of people during my week in Hawaii.

The trip covered two islands only, Maui and The Big Island (Hawaii). And it just barely scratched the surface.

In the short week however, I covered a lot of ground. I visited a clothing optional beach where little kids were running, hippies were smoking and playing bongos, and tourists were trying hard to fit into something right out of the 70s. I drove through communities of hippies, local folk, tourist areas, young and older surfers riding beautiful waves, and other strange human type beings

I drove up an ancient volcano, hiked down into it to discover a world that wasn't of Earth. I drove a road through lush topics, saw stray cats getting along with brilliant colored chickens, and discovered what it means when a sign says 'Narrow bridges ahead' and realized that there should also have been a sign that said 'Questionable road ahead'.

I saw what the violence and beauty of nature could do. I inhaled dangerous volcanic fumes, crossed vast lava flows, watched water and lava explode in raw beauty. I explored an underwater world of sea creatures in a submerged lava flow.

I traveled to the top of the tallest mountain on Earth and experienced winter in the middle of summer. And I saw the heavens like I have never seen them before.

All in all, not a bad week. Just wondering what I will find on my next visit to these wonderful islands. I am already thinking about some massive canyons along the shore line and perhaps hiking all the way around one of the islands. But for now, it is good enough to enjoy the memories of this first remarkable trip.
