Box Canyon Falls is a stunning sight. It is nestled right on the edge of town, just as you begin the Million Dollar Highway. Nature is truly amazing; how water has carved its way through such narrow stone passages.
Most visitors will probably park in their designated area (it’s also quite easy to walk there from anywhere in town), pay the small entrance fee, and then explore. They’ve created groomed paths, metal stairs, and routes that let you get right back into the box canyon and see the falls and stream up close. Plus, there’s a little gift shop and a longer trail that climbs up above to connect to the Perimeter Trail.
If you’re starting from the bottom, I suggest taking that short trail up (it has lots of steps and is a bit steep, but it’s well-marked with railings, etc.). At the top on the Perimeter Trail, you can walk through a narrow tunnel and out across a bridge, looking down at the stream that carved out the falls.
My sister, her husband, and I decided to take one of the connecting trails up to the Perimeter Trail, hike along until we reached the tunnel and suspension bridge, then hike down to the Box Canyon Falls. It made for a lovely round trip from our motel before we had to head back to Grand Junction that afternoon. It was a great way to wrap up our visit.
